TO DO IN CENTRAL AUSTIN

If you came for the food, Central Austin will not disappoint. From your favorite Austin chains to low-key local food trucks, you’ll never be more than a few minutes’ walk from the city’s best eats. If outdoor activity is the choice of the day, Lady Bird Lake in the center of town is the perfect diversion. Hike or bike around the 10-mile trail surrounding the lake, or rent a paddleboard for some on-the-water fun. Zilker Park is the city’s best spot for laying out, hosting picnics, practicing disc golf, and watching dogs play fetch. Across the street, Barton Springs Pool is a must-visit natural spring for swimming if you can tolerate the chilly temperatures!

If you’ve never been bat-watching, you won’t want to miss out on one of the coolest sights in the city. In the summertime, head to the Anna W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge for a glimpse of the largest urban bat colony in North America swarming out to feed at dusk. Over one million bats call this area home and consume 30,000 pounds of insects for Austin (thank you, bats)! Long live the “weird” that is Austin, Texas.
