So to make your lives that much easier and saving you the trouble of finding these little gems, we’ve made a short list of just a few classic Austin spots that will be sure to quench your hunger! Threadgills First opened as a bar in 1933, this famous restaurant is at the top of our list. Not only because it is a true Austin staple, but because it will soon be shutting its doors on its Riverside location for good sometime this November. With that being said, get there while you still can and enjoy some live music and chicken fried steak! Be sure to check out the Sunday brunch buffet for a true Austin Sunday funday!   Matt’s Famous El Rancho Located on South Lamar, this Austin classic has stood its ground since 1952! Matt’s Famous El Rancho is totally worth the long waits on the weekend when you want to get your hands on some of Austin’s best queso. Let’s not forget about their margaritas being made with freshly squeezed limes, yum. Brunch, lunch, dinner, you name it and on any day of the week you can love it, except for Tuesdays though because they’re closed.   Hut’s Hamburgers Originally opened in 1939 as “Sammie’s Drive-In”. Fun And Festive Fall Things To Do In Austin

By | Austin, Food, Halloween, Live music

Summer is over, and Fall has finally crept up on us. Thank goodness the temperature is finally below 90 degrees! Now that the weather has changed, it’s time to think of new season things to do that don’t always involve swimming or being outside. We have some ideas up our sleeve that we think you’ll like too. So kick back, enjoy that hot apple cider and pumpkin scented candle you’re burning– and read this! HAUNTED HOUSES Looking for a good scare? Check out Austin’s House of Torment! With three frightening and thrilling attractions, this will for sure give you the adrenaline rush you’re seeking! They also have food and drinks to warm you up before you get scared cold. Check out the grueling Graveside Manor (featuring a goul nun who will likely scare you out of your socks). Or, step inside an old prison with deranged beings that will haunt your every move. If that’s not enough for ya’ll, they also have a creepy Carnival with clowns that will leave you fearful  (if you have clown phobia, we do not recommend this) . HALLOWEEN MOVIE WATCH PARTIES Since Stranger Things Season Two just released today on Netflix, we were feeling super inspired to write this blog post for ya’ll. Invite over all your friends for a Stranger Things watch party and grab snacks, and pumpkin beer (PSA: Trader Joe’s has everything pumpkin related). If you need to watch Stranger Things by yourself uninterrupted — we totally understand. Pick a movie like Hocus…

Best of.. South Lamar Happy Hours!

By | Austin, Food, Live music

It’s Friday, and we know it’s the weekend and you’re itching to get through the last few hours of work. Ya’ll are probably racing through rush hour traffic to get to the closest bar with a great happy hour to wash away all your stress from your week! Nothing beats a cold beer, live music, and good eats after a long week– ATX style! We’re really digging the South Lamar (also known as SoLa for short) area and all the awesome happy hours that it has for Austinites. South Lamar is located in the South Central part of Austin, also known as the 78704. Most restaurants and bars on this street are super laid back, relaxing, and even allow you to bring your dog to kick it with you. RED’S PORCH Our favorite happy hour is at the cool and casual– Red’s Porch. With views of the Greenbelt on their upper deck, and plenty of space for you and your coworkers to throw back brews at, this is the perfect place to decompress from a week of stress. Their happy hour is from 4pm-11pm and their food specials are from 4pm-7pm. Some of our favorite appetizers include the Red’s Chili Cheese Fries and the Red’s Queso (YUM!). The Red’s strawberry margaritas are so refreshing along with their seasonal draft beers. Image Source LAVACA STREET BAR Another one of our favorite places on SoLa, is the new Lavaca Street Bar! Our Favorite Food Trucks In Austin

By | Austin, Food

ATX is home to some of the tastiest and trendiest food trucks in America. With over 1,000 mobile food vendors in Austin, you could literally eat at a different food truck each day for almost 3 years (challenge accepted). But seriously, if you live in Austin, you know there is at least one food truck around every corner; so, here at Smart City we’ve narrowed it down to 4 of our favorites! VERACRUZ ALL NATURAL:  Open daily from 7am to 3pm Veracruz sells a variety of authentic Mexican food including fresh salsa, homemade tortillas and chips, quesadillas, an assortment of tacos, and they also have a separate vegetarian menu for all you non-meat eaters out there. Our favorite item on the menu: The migas tacos, because they are seriously to die for. Made with crushed tortilla chips, onions, tomatoes, cilantro, eggs, cheese, fresh salsa, and a giant slice of avocado, all piled on a homemade corn tortilla. Some Austinites say these are the best tacos in town! Locations on E. Cesar Chavez, Manchaca Rd, and in Round Rock! BURRO CHEESE KITCHEN:  Open Mon-Sat 11:30am to 8:30pm and Sunday 12pm-5pm Ummm, this place will probably change your life. Burro Cheese Kitchen is a gourmet grilled cheese sandwich shop that redefines the meaning of grilled cheese. YUMMY AF DONUTS IN AUSTIN

By | Apartments, Food

They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day so why eat a spinach egg white omelet when you can go full psycho on some donuts? Am I right?!? We’ve compiled a list of some amazing donuts that you HAVE to try! Here are 4 of our favorite donut shops in Austin! GOURDOUGH’S  Gourdough’s on South Congress is probably one of the most well-known donut spots in Austin, for good reason. They come up with some really incredible recipes and keep us excited to try new donuts. We recommend you try the flying pig: a freshly fried donut topped with maple syrup icing and bacon. Yep, we said bacon. Bacon. DONUT TACO PALACE II  Breakfast tacos are basically the king of Austin. So take breakfast tacos and then smash them with donuts and Voila! You have Donut Taco Palace! We recommend the Taco Donut. Envision a donut stuffed with sausage, egg, potato, bacon, and cheese. Now envision eating it while laying on your couch and watching Netflix. Now envision dying, the happiest you’ve ever been. KEN’S DONUTS  Ken’s Donuts near UT is the best late night dessert spot that’s also open 24 hours a day. Stroll in at 3 am feeling a little tipsy, hit on a co-ed and buy a donut. I’m pretty sure that’s our dream meet cute. We recommend their éclair filled with crème and covered in chocolate. Yum!!! MRS. JOHNSON’S BAKERY  If you’re over the fancy donut trend and you want to just…

Our Favorite Austin Restaurants On A Budget!

By | Austin, Food

ACL is only a few months away, and I’m sure you’re saving up all your pretty pennies to have the wildest time (or at least be able to afford an Uber with those darn surge prices). Well, while you’re riding that struggle bus, here are some of our favorite Austin spots for some grub on the cheap cheap. HABANERO Austin proudly claims the Tex in Tex-Mex, and Habanero has consistently been one of Austin’s best spots for that! The lunch special is $6.95, which is 1/514th the cost of an ACL platinum ticket! That’s a freaking SAVING. So chow down on some chicken mole and just imagine yourself bumping bodies with sweaty strangers Kendrick Lamar. Good Food, M.A.A.D. cheap, amiright? CASA DE LUZ You know, that vegan train may have been a little weird a few years back, but now it is totally cool to vegan, organic, gluten-free, and every other label that makes a chef want to pull their hairs out. Fortunately, Casa de Luz doesn’t mind! They’re this awesome little under-the-radar find that defines itself more as a community center than a restaurant. The food is awesome, the food is hella good for you, and you can get a three course meal for $12!! FOODHEADS Remember those days you’d run over to your best friends house and their mom would be fixing up some freaking bomb sandwiches that taste so much better because its not YOUR mom making you clean the dishes after? Yeah, FoodHeads is kinda like…

The Best CFS In ATX!

By | Austin, Food

There are very few things better than Southern cooking to Texans. Chicken-fried steak is a staple in Southern cooking that should NEVER be looked over. Because who doesn’t want their steak deep-fried and covered in peppered gravy? When you need your CFS fix, here are some spots you need to hit! Gourdough’s Public House in the South Lamar District Gourdough’s may be known for its artery-clogging donuts, but they also sell one amazing chicken-fried steak. Gourdough’s makes a hand-battered steak with a potato pancake and thick, white gravy, and tops it off with cranberry-habanero jam. Oh, and it’s all conveniently laying on a donut. A donut. The end. Lucy’s Fried Chicken in Allandale/South Congress The chicken-fried steak is a fairly regular special at Lucy’s Fried Chicken. The batter is always golden and the cream gravy is always piled high. Depending on which location you go to, you’ll find different styles of chicken fried steak! But you know the batter will be golden and the cream gravy will be plentiful. Red’s Porch in South Lamar District Red’s Porch is a great place to patio and eat a delicious chicken-fried steak. They come out massive and coated in incredible bacon gravy. You get bacon & horseradish mashed potatoes, or you can go for the green chile mac & cheese.   Featured Photo Cred
