It may be great for Austin because it means the area is growing and becoming more popular but it can also suck for the people who want to lease an apartment in a central area. If you graduated from college between May and August (AKA everyone) then you’ve probably gotten trapped in a continuous 12-month lease cycle that takes you right back to the expensive move dates of the summer. This means everyone is scrambling to sign a lease at the same time which means prices tend to skyrocket in those months. Try signing a longer lease or shorter lease so that you’re lease will end in the spring or winter. Prices are significantly easier to budget around in November/December.
With all of the new apartment construction going on in the city, prices are going up because the construction is adding more value to the neighborhoods and surrounding apartments. Try checking out some new spots around the city for better deals, you never know what gems you might find at an awesome price! Even though you may think you are destined to be a Downtown person, you actually might like living in a sweet South Austin apartment. As long as you’re within 5 Uber minutes of all your favorite spots, you’ll be totally happy with your choice and you’ll even end up saving some dough!
The last three things we want people to take into consideration is to plan further out to avoid competing for the last few units left in August, to find a roommate, and to take a closer look at newer properties. We know that getting a roommate can seem lame AF. Who wants to bring someone back to their place on a Friday night and then run into your roommate? BUT having a roommate can save you TONS of money on rent and on top of that, you won’t have to worry about covering bills all on your own! This is where the newer property suggestion comes in to play. Any property built after 2009 is required to have Energy Star appliances, long story short: it cuts your bills in half. Also, brand new properties usually have INSANE specials!!
